Rummy vs Teen Patti: How the Two Games Differ
Both use the phrase pure sequence. It means something different in each game, and that is only the start.

The main differences
Cards: teen patti uses one 52-card deck and three cards each. Indian rummy uses two decks plus printed jokers and 13 cards each.
Goal: in teen patti you win the pot by holding the best hand at the show or by making everyone else pack. In rummy you win by being first to arrange all 13 cards into valid groups and declaring.
Pace: a teen patti round is short and you play many of them. A rummy deal takes longer, with a draw and a discard on every turn.
Betting: betting is the whole of teen patti. In most rummy formats you stake an amount before the deal and the result is settled on points.
What a pure sequence means in rummy
In rummy, a sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. A pure sequence is one made without any joker, such as 5-6-7 of hearts or 9-10-J-Q of spades. An impure sequence uses a joker to fill a gap, such as 5 of hearts, joker, 7 of hearts.
A valid declaration needs at least two sequences, and at least one of them must be pure. The rest of your cards can go into more sequences or into sets (three or four cards of the same rank in different suits). Declaring without a pure sequence is the most common way beginners take a heavy penalty.
Q-K-A is a valid rummy sequence, and so is A-2-3. K-A-2 is not, because runs do not wrap around the Ace.
What a pure sequence means in teen patti
In teen patti, a pure sequence is exactly three consecutive cards of the same suit, and it is a finished hand you are dealt, not something you build. It ranks second, beaten only by a trail. Only 48 of the 22,100 possible hands are pure sequences, so you will see one roughly once in 460 deals. Our teen patti sequence list has the full ranking.
Skill vs luck
In 1968, the Supreme Court of India held in State of Andhra Pradesh v. K. Satyanarayana that rummy is mainly a game of skill. Picking which cards to keep, tracking discards and choosing when to drop all affect results over many deals.
Teen patti gives you three cards and no draw, so the deal decides far more. Skill shows up in betting: when to pack, when to play blind and when to ask for a sideshow.
The legal position on real-money play is separate from the skill question. India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games whether they are based on skill or chance. Check the current rules where you live before playing for money.
Rummy formats you will see in apps
Points rummy is a single deal settled on the points left in the losers' hands. Pool rummy (101 or 201) runs over several deals, and a player who reaches 101 or 201 points is eliminated until one remains. Deals rummy is played over a fixed number of deals with chips.
